About the artist: "Chipman Lyman Smith was born in Chester, Nova Scotia in 1898, the son of Cottman and Annie May (Walker) Smith. Smith was a well-known garage operator in Chester for many years and was known for his woodworking. Chipman Smith used various types of wood such as birch, cherry, chestnut and tamarack, which he would stain or lacquer. The majority of his bowls were made in the 1960s and 1970s.
